During a recent weekend escape, I visited a place I’ve heard about for months but had never taken the time to truly explore — the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chino Hills, California. I didn’t expect it to leave such a lasting impression on me, but it did.

From the moment I stepped through the gates, I was struck by the calmness of the space. The air felt lighter, the sounds quieter, and for a moment, I forgot I was still in Southern California.

The temple itself is stunning — carved from pristine Italian marble and Indian sandstone, with delicate details etched into every column, dome, and pillar. It’s more than just beautiful architecture; it’s a living work of art. Each carving, each figure, has meaning — layers of stories and symbolism tied to the Hindu tradition.

What made the visit even more special was the peaceful atmosphere. Even with other visitors around, there was a deep sense of stillness. I found myself slowing down, breathing deeper, and just soaking it all in. It felt like a pause button had been pressed on everything else happening in life.

The Mandir is open to all, regardless of background or belief, and offers a welcoming space to learn, reflect, or simply admire. There’s a visitor center, a small shop with books and traditional items, and occasionally you’ll catch cultural programs or evening aartis that add even more depth to the experience.

If you’re planning to go:

• Dress modestly (you’ll be asked to remove your shoes before entering the main temple).

• Photography is allowed outside but not inside.

• Admission is free. Which is really cool.

• The best time to visit is in the early morning or around sunset — the light hits the temple beautifully.

This visit reminded me how important it is to seek out places that help you reconnect — with your thoughts, your spirit, and the quiet parts of yourself that get lost in the noise. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir isn’t just a place of worship — it’s a place of peace.

I highly recommend visiting, even if it’s just for a short time. It’s the kind of place that stays with you.
